Scrabble Players Alert: Dallas Open This Weekend

|

I play Scrabble a lot. I used to play more, usually online at the Internet Scrabble Club. But even at my two-bingo-per-game best, I probably couldn’t hang with folks who will be in town this weekend for the fourth annual Dallas Open, including local pro and all around swell fella Chris Cree. Jump for the full details. And if anyone wants a game, you know where to find me.

UPDATE: I have been challenged to a game (best two out of three) by one Dave Levinthal. We’re looking for a venue. I had to go and rattle the cage of the guy who owns Scrabble-tile cufflinks, didn’t I?

DALLAS (March 13-15, 2009) The 4th annual Dallas Open will be held at the Crowne Plaza Suites Dallas Park Central Friday-Sunday, March 13-15, 2009. There will be over 130 participants from throughout the United States and Canada all here to play 19 games vying for a $3,000 first prize.

The field includes top seeded Joey Mallick from Portland, Maine, former National Champion and 2008 Player of the Year, Dave Wiegand from Portland, Oregon, former National and World Champion Joel Sherman from Bronx, New York and 7-time Texas State Champion Chris Cree from Dallas.

Live coverage from Table 1 will be available at www.dallasopen.com.

There are approximately 10,000 active SCRABBLE tournament players and over 200 sanctioned SCRABBLE clubs throughout North America. The popular board game has seen a resurgence in popularity over the past 5 years with the release of Stefan Fatsis’ book, Word Freak: Heartbreak, Triumph, Genius, and Obsession in the World of Competitive SCRABBLE Players, which chronicles the subculture.
