Jennifer Staubach Gates Saves a Man’s Life

|

This is a great story. Dallas City Councilwoman Jennifer Staubach Gates performed CPR on a man at The Mercury, in North Dallas, yesterday. He was foaming from the mouth. He had no pulse. She saved his life.

Small quibble, though: Scott Goldstein writes that The Mercury’s GM “said everyone has been talking about the council member’s heroics.” Whether the GM or Goldstein used the word “heroics” isn’t clear. But Gates did nothing heroic. She did not put her own life in jeopardy. She did nothing particularly brave. She did was she was trained to do. From the story:

Gates worked as a hospital nurse more than 20 years ago. More recently, she served as a substitute school nurse. She said she can’t remember the last time she was trained in CPR and she had never performed it on anyone before Monday.

“It’s something you never forget,” she said. “I just did what I’ve been trained to do.”

As I say, a great story. Gates has now helped a Dallas citizen in a more dramatic and direct fashion than any sitting councilperson has or will. But let’s not diminish the word “hero.” Gates is not a hero. She’s just awesome.
